My genera is science fiction, so I love it when I use something in my daily life that was once considered a part of that realm. Like today. I started writing this post on a small touch screen device. I can not wait until we get to the good stuff like holograms, faster than light travel, and cost-effective personal transport devices so we no longer have to worry about car repair bills and dependence on fossil fuels.
The only reason I am a sci-fi writer is because some of my characters are alien and some of the stories revolve around time travel and a time paradox. Do I have any new technology in my stories? Not really. But then my focus and drive has always been about putting story and characters first.
Meaningful characters and engaging stories is why I have mixed feelings about sequels and prequels. If they let you spend a little more time with the characters that you love in a genuine sort of way. If they are just done for making money then I don’t see a need for them. I know the books currently in my series help move along the story and develop the characters. Will there be sixteen of them in the end? I’m not sure. I do know if that I reach the point where I’m just turning them out just to make money, then I will seriously question both my sanity and judgment.
