In Her Own Words

As a child I loved to color but I was never a very good artist so I began to weave meanings and pictures with words instead. I expressed these words in school work or poetry. Here is a poem I wrote when I was about sixteen:

Sunshine on a cool day.
Warming my face like an oven.
Wind whispering softly “it is a new day,”
Blows my hair from side to side.
A breath of life fills my lungs.
Then is gently exhaled.
Curiosities fill my mind.
But I have no time to think.
Sprung forth to see what is in store for me.
What waits around the next corner?
Something to tear out my insides,
Or something to fill every pore with joy.
I step softly to the ground,
Letting the squishiness seep up between my toes.
Where am I?
No one knows.
For here I’m safe to walk among my dreams
Feel every feeling no matter how wrong.
Here my thoughts run deep,
And my mind grows strong.
Quiet for I am dreaming,
Of a world with no pain.
Of a place where peace is taken for granted.
Then the warmth of the sun touches me again.
I wake from my dream finding myself here.
Lost in a world of cruelties and untruthfulness.
Why can’t we open our eyes to face the death?
For we are killing each other.

As I grew up my mind never quit imagining and creating stories but the realities of entering the business world soon took over. I was taught “business writing,” void of description and fantastically painted scenes. My creativity burned in my soul and begged me for release.

To attend college, I drove back and forth from Sacramento to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains Along this drive I imagined and developed a story of a woman grasping for survival. As the story grew and grew, I had to write it down. It wasn’t a quick process and took me over eight years to finish. I was bogged down with college, family and then my career but the story was ever present and I kept on writing.

Never having very good luck with being pregnant, I was put on bed-rest when my second born son was about eight months into his gestation period. I had nothing but time on my hands so I wrote. The ideas jumped out of my head and the story finally received an ending. My novel had been created and Day After Disaster was born.

Excited about my accomplishment of finishing a whole book, I asked my mom if she would like to read it and she asked me “aren’t you going to publish it?” I was not sure if I wanted to. It was my story and who would want to read it? It was a culmination of my survival skills and family experiences and I wasn’t sure I wanted to share that with the world.

Encouraged by her support but very naïve to the publishing world, I contacted a few publishers and found out that it was not going to be an easy or inexpensive project. With my mom’s support Day After Disaster was published and is now available worldwide.
